What is neurodermatitis?
The term neurodermatitis stems from the 19th century. At that time it was assumed that the cause of the skin disease was an inflammation of the nerves. Later on this view was disproved; however, the term is still widely spread.
Other familiar terms are atopical eczema, atopical dermatitis and endogenous eczema. Furthermore the disease is also called chronically constitutional eczema, asthmatical eczema and Prurigo Besnier. The orthodox medicine's therapy consists primarily of the treatment of the typical skin dryness and the exterior use of anti-inflammatory active substances.

Neurodermatitis is a disease widespread in industrial states often affecting children. 5-20% of the children and 1-3% of the adults are afflicted by this disease. In Germany 8-16% of all children fall ill with neurodermatitis before school enrolment. For about 60% of the affected cases the disease shows in their first year of life, for 90% up to their fifth year. Often the symptoms decrease with ageing and sometimes disappear at the beginning of puberty. Up to 70% of the originally affected cases are symptom-free in their adult age.
Neurodermatitis is observed more and more often. Compared to the middle of the 20th century it is now four to six times more frequent. Reasons for this are not unambiguously ascertainable. More frequent allergies, changed living conditions and improved hygiene (hygiene hypothesis) are discussed as possible causes.

What are the causes of neurodermatitis?
The exact cause is unknown in spite of long-standing research. It can well be a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors.
It is often the case that neurodermatitis strikes all members of the same family. The immune system also plays an important role here.
Although research has made some progress during the last thirty years, the pharmaceutical industry still thinks of neurodermatitis as a conundrum.

Main symptoms are red, scabbing, sometimes even weeping, eczemas on the skin and strong itching. The disease runs in batches and has an individual appearance dependent on the age.

Is it possible to pass neurodermatitis on to my children?
Yes, this is possible. Although neurodermatitis is not contagious, there is a genetic tendency to pass it on from parents to children.
